Tip: Use a capo to make chord changes easier

A capo is a small device that clamps onto the neck of your guitar, raising the pitch of the strings without changing your finger positions.

This is one of our favourite capo’s at Change at sixty

With a capo you can

  • Play in Different Keys Easily

Instead of learning new chord shapes, you can move the capo up the neck to change the key of a song.

  • Simplify Chords

If a song has tricky barre chords, a capo lets you use easier open chords instead.

  • Match Your Vocal Range

If a song feels too low or too high for your voice, a capo helps you adjust the pitch quickly.

  • Create a Brighter Tone

Moving the capo higher up the neck gives your guitar a lighter, more sparkling sound—perfect for holiday songs.

  • Experiment with Sound

Capos open up creative possibilities for different chord voicings and textures.

Practice Tips for Your Easy Christmas Guitar Songs for Beginners

With only a few weeks to go to the festive season you’ll need to start practicing if you want to entertain your family and friends during the holidays. Here’s a suggested practice schedule from Change at Sixty

10-minute sessions

Playing a song on guitar for a few minutes and then having a break is better than spending hours trying to learn the whole song. Practice the first verse over several 10-minute sessions, spaced out then do the same with the chorus. Before you know it, you’ll have Jingle Bells all done. Then on to the next one.

Play along with YouTube tutorials.

You’ll find someone on You Tube who is teaching the same songs you want to learn. Play along with them line by line and soon you’ll have mastered the whole song.

Keep your guitar handy in the living room for spontaneous strumming.

Don’t pack your guitar away after practice. Keep in handy so you can walk past it and pick it up for a quick 10-minute practice at any time, that way you’ll get a few practices in every day. Having your guitar sitting on it’s stand rather than under your bed will mean  you’ll practice more.

If you haven’t got a stand here’s one of our favourites, sturdy well priced and looks good
