There’s a quiet moment many men experience in their sixties. I know, I’m there.
Our careers slow down. The structure we’ve been used to disappears. The phone doesn’t ring as often. Maybe our input is not requested as often, and while retirement is supposed to feel like freedom, it can feel strangely unsteady and even alien.
I’ve come to believe that the real issue isn’t money or our fear of not having that regular pay check anymore.
It’s our usefulness. Are we less sought after for the problem solving that we’ve been used to for so long both in personal and working life. Is our advice less called upon and valued. Our loved ones will probably deny that but it doesn’t dispel the feeling.
For years we’ve built, rebuilt, maintained, invented and passed on skills to others. When we turn sixty there seems to be a void. Not for everyone but it’s there for many of us.
That’s why I think affiliate marketing after 60 deserves a serious look — not as a get-rich-quick idea, but as a structured way to stay mentally engaged and build something that we’ve heard of but always seemed a bit mysterious.
The penny dropped when I realised that just about everything you buy online comes from an affiliate. So, when I bought that new shower head, someone on the other side of the world earned a commission.
I thought, I can do that, it can’t be that hard and guess what it hasn’t been. I have learned new skills and can now see the benefits of my new learnings.
That’s how Change at Sixty came about.
It’s where you’re reading this post. Change at Sixty challenged me in all sorts of creative and technical elements but at the same time gave me an enormous sense of achievement, and guess what those closest to me were amazed at what I have created and now come and ask me for advice. How things change eh. Just like the old days.
What I found was missing though. was an easy Step by Step Guide on how to build your own affiliate website.
So of course I couldn’t help myself, This article is Stage 1 of a 10-stage process I’ll be walking through here on Change at Sixty over the coming weeks.
If you follow each stage step by step, you’ll be able to build your understanding steadily — and, if you choose, build your own affiliate website.
Check out one of our earlier blogs Your First Affiliate Website After 60
Let’s begin the process properly:
What This 10-Stage Process Will Cover
Over the next ten weeks, I’ll guide you through:
- Your mindset & realistic expectations
- How to choose a simple niche
- How affiliate marketing actually works
- Buying your own domain name
- Hosting & installing WordPress (where your website will live online)
- How to structure your website
- Writing your first useful articles
- Joining affiliate programs
- Understanding how to drive traffic & patience
- Turning your project into a sustainable weekly system
It’s not going to be dramatic. I’m not going to tell you you’re doing it wrong, or if you do it my way you’ll be driving a Lamborghini in a few months.
We’ll go slowly week by week and aim for steady progress.
If you’ve ever felt that you learn best one manageable step at a time, then this will suit you.
First, What is Affiliate Marketing.
In plain English, affiliate marketing means recommending products online and earning a small commission if someone buys through your link.
That’s it. It’s not complicated. Think of the last product you bought online, chances are someone earned a commission on your purchase.
- No stock market speculation. No selling to friends. No complicated inventory.
You create helpful content on a subject or niche you’re passionate about — usually through a website — and you include special tracking links that are related to products relevant to your niche . If someone clicks and buys a product from that link, you earn a commission.
The structure is simple:
Helpful, interesting content creates trust with your audience, they click on your link make a purchase and you get paid.
As an example (and don’t worry you don’t have to buy when you click on this link)
This is my Hostinger Affiliate Link
When you click on it it will take you to the Hostinger Page. If you were to purchase a hosting plan via this link (which you will eventually need if you develop your own affiliate website) I would earn a small commission
When people talk about affiliate marketing after 60, they often focus on income. How much can I make and how quickly will I have that Lamborghini?
But for me income is the by-product.
The real value at the beginning is learning and building. Something we need in this stage of your lives as 60 year old’s
Why Affiliate Marketing After 60 Makes Sense
When we talk about affiliate marketing after 60, we’re really talking about something much deeper and as equally important than just commissions.
We’re talking about:
- Learning something brand new and totally different to what you’ve done before
- Building a small digital asset that over time can provide you with a passive income
- Sharpening your thinking by creating relevant content
- Creating a structured weekly process that possibly you are missing
- Producing something which is useful for people just like you
Many men in their sixties don’t need another full time career.
But we do need engagement in something that benefits our sense of purpose as we grow older.
Building an affiliate website requires you to do these things. You might have done all, some, or none of them in your life, but don’t worry I hadn’t had any exposure to these in my working life either, but I amazed myself at how easy they were to learn.
- Research
- Writing
- Problem-solving
- Decision-making
- Technical learning
All excellent mental exercises for us, and unlike many hobbies, this one has the potential — over time — to generate modest income.
We’re not talking about you becoming the next over night internet sensations (but if it happens to you congratulations)
We’re not talking about dramatic adjustments to your daily life. a few hours a week, consistently, is all it takes to create something very special
Firstly, Let’s Remove the Unrealistic Expectations
Affiliate marketing has a mixed reputation because it’s often marketed badly.
You’ll see headlines promising all sorts of instant results.,
- Passive income in 30 days
- Freedom from work forever
- “Laptop lifestyle” earnings
and more often than not you’ll end up paying for a program or course that costs a lot, promised even more and fails to deliver any results. I know I invested in the glossy, guy in the Lamborghini programs and didn’t make any money out of them at all.
That is not what we’re doing here.
Affiliate marketing after 60 is not a shortcut.
It’s a skill.
It’s like learning guitar or improving your golf swing.
or rebuilding your fitness.
The first few months are about learning:
- How websites work
- How content attracts readers
- How search engines operate
- How trust is built online
The early stage feels unfamiliar and you might get impatient and frustrated but that’s normal when you’re learning anything new but the process itself restores confidence
You Are Not Too Old for This
Let’s face it technology can feel intimidating, but here’s something worth remembering:
Most website tools today are simpler than they’ve ever been.
If you can:
- Send an email
- Use online banking
- Order something on Amazon
You can learn the basics of affiliate marketing after 60.
The difference isn’t age it’s willingness to learn something new and a desire to see the end result of something you’ve created, and let’s face it an opportunity to silence any doubters.
And we, as men over 60, often have a distinct advantage that comes with age: We have
- Patience
- Life experience
- Measured judgement
- Less impulsiveness
All of these characteristics are valuable in affiliate marketing and if you’ve got them, which most men over 60 do, you’re way ahead of most men our age
What This Really Builds (Beyond Income)
Yes with affiliate marketing, commissions are possible. But the deeper benefits matter more in the beginning.
When you build an affiliate website, you create:
- Structure in your week
- A reason to research
- A reason to write
- A reason to improve
- A small project that is yours
After decades of working for companies or clients, building something under your own name feels different even if it starts small, especially if it starts small.
How to Approach Stage 1 Properly
This first stage is about mindset.
If you’re considering affiliate marketing after 60, approach it like this:
- Think in Years, Not Weeks
Websites grow slowly and that’s normal. - Aim for Competence, Not Perfection
Your first articles won’t be masterpieces. That’s fine, neither were mine. - Commit to a Weekly Rhythm
Five to seven hours a week (an hour or so a day) is enough to start. - Measure your Learning, Not Earnings
The early wins are creative growth and technical understanding, not commissions.
When you shift from “How much can I make?” to “What can I create and learn this week?” everything changes and watch your confidence soar.
Just writing this blog excites me and I amaze myself at what I can create, what I’ve learned and still learning.
A Step-By-Step Path You Can Follow
If this resonates with you, I’d encourage you to follow this 10-stage series here on Change at Sixty.
Each week we’ll tackle one practical step.
You can:
- Read the post
- Reflect on it
- Begin applying it
- Build your understanding gradually
There’s no rush.By the end of the process, you’ll not only understand affiliate marketing after 60 — you’ll have the foundation of your own website.
Final Thought
Affiliate marketing after 60 is not about proving anything to anyone.
It’s about proving something quietly to yourself:
- That you can still learn, adapt and build
This is Stage 1. the beginning of an easy 10 step process for you to follow at your own pace and develop you very own affiliate website.
